Kerala, referred to as 'God's own Country', is not only famous for its amazing natural beauty but also for its colorful and vibrant culture. The cultural richness of Kerala lies in its colorful festivals, dances and other performing arts.
Numerous festivals are celebrated in Kerala all round the year. As Kerala is a diverse society, there are many festivals associated with different religious communities. But one festival that is celebrated with great enthusiasm by every Keralite is Onam, the most famous harvest festival of Kerala.
Onam is celebrated in the memory of the golden era of King Mahabali, whose spirit is believed to visit Kerala during Onam. The 10-day Onam festival is held every year at the end of August or beginning of September. During the festival numerous rituals, colorful sports and cultural programs are organized, which give a festive color to the whole of Kerala.
People wear new clothes and cook and feast on traditional Kerala cuisine to mark this colorful harvest festival.
Dance and music form an integral part of Onam and numerous Kathakali dance programs are organized everywhere in Kerala for the enjoyment of people. Many snake boat races are also organized which add more color to this colorful festival.
One of the major attractions of Onam is the swing, especially for the rural areas of Kerala. Young men and women, beautifully dressed in colorful costumes sing Onappaattu (Onam songs) and rock one another on swings slung from high branches.
Onam is celebrated not only by Hindus but also by Christians and Muslims. It is one such festival that unites all the people regardless of race and religion.
Thumbi Thullal is a folk dance performed by a group of women who sit in the formation of a circle. The lead performer sits inside the circle and initiates the song. Some women also perform the clap dance dressed in their best clothes and ethnic jewelry.
Onakalikal :
This is a collective name for all the games played on the occasion of Onam. Traditional games of Onam constitute rigorous sports like Talappanthukali, Kutukutu and combats like Kayyankali and Attakalam. Archery is also a part of Onakalikal.
