In 1498 the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed at Kappad Beach, near Kozhikode. After the British grew to become the dominant trading power, Kozhikode, renamed Calicut, became an important British trading outpost. A locally made variety of checked cloth called Calico (from Calicut) was a popular item of export.
Once the capital of the powerful zamorins, a prominent trade and commerce center and the land of the Malabar Mahotsavam, Kozhikode was the most important region of Malabar in the days gone by.
Today, ancient monuments, lush green countrysides, serene beaches, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, hills, a unique culture and a warm, friendly ambience make this district a much sought after destination.

This charming bird sanctuary attracts tourists in droves. Situated 25 kilometers from Kozhikode this serves as a natural habitat for many water birds. The exotic birds found here are herons, gulls, terns and sandpipers. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between the months of November and April.

The Karipur International Airport, 23 kms from the town is the nearest Airport to reach the Kozhikode backwaters. The Kozhikode railway station is about 16 kms from the town and the backwaters.
