Ponmudi hill station is nestled at an altitude of 1000 m above the sea level and at a distance of 61 km from Thiruvananthapuram. It is fast growing as a popular tourist destination among tourists. The beach is adorned with high cliffs and mineral-water springs all around the coastline. The major attractions of the Varkala are the 2,000-year-old Janardanaswamy Temple and the Nature Center.

The Aaranmula Boat Race is staged each year in the scenic village of Aaranmula in August/ September. This river carnival is part of the Aaranmula Temple festival.

Varkala Beach
Varkala is a sea side resort, as well as an important Hindu centre of pilgrimage. High cliffs with rich mineral springs rise majestically from the coastline. The 2,000 year old Janardana Swamy Temple and the Nature Centre are the two main attractions here.

There are a good number of shops on the beach. Shops sell Blankets, Goods, Jewellery and ornaments mainly from Kashmir, Rajasthan or Nepal. Spices, the specialty of Kerala, are also available here.
