Parassinikadavu : 16 km from Kannur, Sri Muthappan Temple stands on the Banks of the Valapattanam River. This pilgrim centre is famous for the Muthappan Theyyam performed every morning and evening.
St.Angelo fort : The St. Angelos Fort is a major tourist attraction in Kannur was built in 1505 by Portugese. It is 2kms away from Railway station.The Mappila Bay Harbor and Arakkal Mosque are near the fort.
Aralam wild life sanctuary : It is the one and only wild life sanctuary in Kannur, covers an area of 55 sq.km. It is about 40 kms from Kannur town. This beautiful place is situvated in the slopes of Western Ghats, coverd with tropical ever green forest. Elephants, bear, deer, monkey, wildcats and a large variety of birds are found here.
Payyambalam beach : It is 2km away from Kannur town.It is blessed with a clean and vast sea shore.The beach is renovated recently with a beautiful park adorning beautiful sculptures by famous sculputure Kanayi Kunhiraman.
Tourist Attractions In And Around Kannur
Pazhassi Dam and Gardens : It is the only reservoir with gardens in Kannur district. The reservoir is mainly used for irrigational purposes. The gardens really worth a visit if you are interested is boating. The District Tourism Promotion Council boats are available to navigate through the river enjoying the silent beauty of Pazhassi dam.The garden is a good attraction with childrens park and sculptures.
Dharmadam Island : The small 5 acre island covered with coconut palms and green bushes is a beautiful sight from the beach. Permission is required to enter this privately owned island.
Paithalmala : Paithalmala is about 1372metres above sea level and is ideal for trekking. It is on the Kerala-Karnataka border and about 65 kms north-east of Kannur city.
Madayi Mosque : This famous mosque was built by Malik Iban Dinar in1124 AD. It is about 22 kms from Kannur town. It is beleved that the marbles used to built the Mosque are brought from Arabia.
Pappinisserry : 16 kms from Kannur town, the snake park here houses about 150 varieties of snakes including the Spectacled Cobra, King Cobra, Russel Viper, Krait and Pit Viper. There is also a large collection of non-poisonous snakes including Pythons. A research laboratory to extract venom from snakes is proposed to be set up here. The park is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of snakes, many species of which are getting extinct gradually..
Gundert Bungalow : Located 20 kms from Kannur, at Nettur, Gundert's Bungalow is on the out skirts of Thalaserry. It is a historically significant place for all lovers of Malayalam Language.Home of Dr. Hermann Gundert (1814-1893), a scholar of the German Basel Mission, who compiled the first Malayalam English dictionary. The revered German priest and lexicographer lived in the bungalow for 20 years from 1839.
Mr. Gundert was the publisher of one of the Malayalam's oldest newspapers, the 'Paschimodayam', and also authored several books on Malayalam grammar.
Jagannatha Festival : Jagannatha Festival is a colourful eight-day festival, which is held in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February/ March) at the Jagannatha Temple at Madathiparambu, near Thalassery in Kannur.The idol of Lord Siva, the presiding deity was installed here by the famous social reformer and philosopher, Sree Narayana Guru on 13th February, 1908. The seventh day of the festival is the most auspicious.
